Bethel UMC Homecoming Photos

1959 and/or 1972 Homecoming

These pictures were provided by Marshall Woodall

Using the "125th Anniversary" frosting on the cake and the year of 1834 for the founding of Bethel, would seem to make this 1959. However, the "picture" of the church on the cake has the narthex (added in 1970) without the steeple (added in 1972). Now, a notation on a picture for the 1962 homecoming indicates it was a 115th celebration, figuring from the 1847 date of Bethel's coming to its current location (affirming the belief that the written church history in a 1947 membership book was for a centennial observation). That would make this "125th Anniversary" take place in 1972.

Still, cars pictured in the black & white photos would seem to bear out a late 1950's date for this homecoming. And one of the pictures may be of blind pastor, Calvin Williams, who served in 1958-1963. So it would appear that this collection of pictures may have come from two different celebrations.
